Online Consultation Guide

How Online Doctor Consultations Work in South Africa.

This guide explains what happens before, during, and after a Udok online doctor consultation. An HPCSA-registered practitioner assesses you by video, voice, or chat, decides what can be handled remotely, and recommends the next step. Standard-hours consultations cost R365; after-hours consultations cost R450.

The consultation process

From feeling unwell to speaking to a doctor, in minutes.

  1. Register and start a consultation.

Create a free Udok profile, then start an online consultation whenever you need one and share some basic information about your symptoms.

  2. Speak to a South African doctor.

An HPCSA-registered doctor consults with you online by video, voice, or chat.

  3. Assessment and diagnosis.

The doctor asks clinical questions, evaluates your symptoms, and determines whether a diagnosis can be made remotely.

  4. Treatment or next steps.

When clinically appropriate, you may receive a digital prescription, a sick note, treatment advice, or a referral for in-person care.

  5. Follow-up support.

Where appropriate, your doctor provides follow-up guidance or arranges further care.

What can an online doctor help with?

Most primary-care needs, handled online — safely, responsibly, and in line with South African telemedicine guidelines.

Everyday illness

Infections, flu, rashes, stomach bugs — assessed, diagnosed, and treated online, with in-person care arranged when a symptom needs a proper look.

Scripts, sick notes, and referrals

When clinically appropriate, your doctor issues digital prescriptions, sick notes, and specialist referrals straight after the consult.

Chronic care and check-ins

Chronic-medication reviews, follow-ups, and advice on whether something needs in-person attention.

Are Udok doctors registered in South Africa?

Yes. All doctors consulting through Udok are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Can I get a prescription or sick note from an online consultation?

Yes — when clinically appropriate, your doctor can issue digital prescriptions, sick notes, and referrals after your consultation.

Do I need medical aid to use Udok?

No. You can use Udok without medical aid and pay for your consultation using one of the available payment methods.

When should I not use an online doctor?

If you have severe symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding), seek emergency care immediately. Online doctors extend access to healthcare — they do not replace emergency services.
