Hybrid Practice Functionality
Udok now enables doctors to operate a hybrid medical practice, allowing them to provide both virtual and in-person care through the Udok platform.
A hybrid practice allows a doctor to consult with patients:
- Virtually through the Udok platform
- In person at the doctor’s registered physical practice
Patients can search for and select an opted-in doctor or practice for either a virtual or in-person consultation, based on the services and availability offered by that practice.
This means a patient can begin their healthcare journey online and, where a physical examination, diagnostic assessment, procedure, or further follow-up is required, continue their care at the doctor’s physical practice.
The hybrid model allows doctors to extend their reach beyond traditional walk-in patients, build relationships with patients virtually, and remain available for appropriate in-person care and long-term continuity of care.
Express and Patient-Selected Consultations
Consultation allocation depends on whether a doctor is consulting under the Udok Practice or through their own opted-in independent practice.
- Udok Practice doctors and locums may receive Express consultations according to Udok’s existing consultation allocation process.
- Opted-in independent practice doctors will not receive Express consultations through their independent practice. Instead, all Udok patients will be able to find and select their chosen practice or doctor for available virtual or in-person consultations.
Existing Udok locums who also operate their own independent practices may participate in both models.
They can continue receiving Express consultations when consulting as Udok locums while also accepting patient-selected bookings through their opted-in independent practices.
Register Your Own Practice
Doctors can register their own independent practices on the Udok platform.
This option is also available to doctors who currently work as locums under the Udok Practice.
To register an independent practice, doctors must provide the required practice information and:
- Have a valid and verified physical practice address if in-person consultations will be offered
- Maintain all required professional and practice registrations
- Meet Udok’s clinical, operational, and quality requirements
- Maintain bookable appointment slots for Udok patients
- Opt in to consult with Udok patients at the fixed patient consultation fee of R365, inclusive of VAT
A physical practice address is required for doctors offering in-person consultations.
This allows patients to consult virtually and, where clinically necessary, visit the doctor’s practice for a physical examination, procedure, assessment, or follow-up.
The registered practice address also helps patients find suitable opted-in practitioners in their town or surrounding area.
Deliver In-Person Care
Doctors can opt in to provide in-person care when they first log in to the updated Udok platform.
This can also be activated later through the opt-in setting on the Practice Setup page.
Once in-person care has been activated, the doctor’s practice may be displayed to eligible patients searching for virtual or in-person healthcare in their area.
Doctors should ensure that the following information remains accurate and up to date:
- Practice information
- Physical practice address
- Operating hours
- Consultation availability
- Bookable appointment slots
Keeping this information current helps patients find the correct practice and book consultations based on the services the doctor actually offers.
Consultation Fees and Doctor Payouts
The patient consultation fee for consultations completed through the Udok Practice and opted-in independent practices is:
R365 per consultation, inclusive of VAT
Doctor payouts depend on the practice under which the consultation is completed.
Opted-In Independent Practices
Opted-In Doctors who complete consultations with Udok patients will receive:
R200 per completed consultation
To qualify for the R200 payout, doctors must:
- Register their own practice on Udok
- Have a valid physical practice address if they offer in-person consultations
- Opt in to consult with Udok patients at the fixed patient consultation fee of R365
- Maintain bookable appointment availability
- Meet Udok’s clinical, operational, and quality requirements
The consultation must be completed under the doctor’s opted-in independent practice to qualify for the R200 payout.
Our Mission: A Hybrid Practitioner in Every Town
Udok’s mission is to build South Africa’s most accessible and connected primary-care network.
We believe virtual care should complement physical healthcare rather than operate separately from it.
Virtual consultations improve convenience and access, but some patients will still require a physical examination, diagnostic assessment, procedure, investigation, or face-to-face follow-up.
The Udok hybrid model connects these two parts of the healthcare journey.
Our goal is to establish at least one trusted Udok hybrid practitioner in every town across South Africa.
Through this network, patients will be able to:
- Find a trusted doctor in or near their community
- Consult virtually from home, work, or while travelling
- Visit a local doctor when an in-person examination is required
- Continue their care with the same doctor or practice
- Access virtual and in-person care through one connected platform
- Keep their clinical information connected across consultations
- Receive more consistent and continuous primary care
For doctors, the Udok hybrid network creates an opportunity to establish and grow a modern independent medical practice.
By combining local physical practices with Udok’s digital infrastructure, patient app, clinical systems, and national provider network, we can improve access to quality primary healthcare while supporting the sustainability and growth of independent medical practices.
Every participating doctor brings us one step closer to ensuring that communities across South Africa have access to trusted local practitioners who can provide both virtual and in-person care.
Together, we are building a decentralised healthcare network that brings connected primary care closer to every South African.
